Fire Pits

Heating up the garden

Looking out of the window, we may see the colours that make our garden an interesting place in which to spend time.

With a fairly minimal amount of effort, it is possible to maintain an outdoor space that can be used throughout the year.

It will, of course, come into its own during the warmer months of the year.

These months will allow us to get outside and to enjoy the warmth of the sun.

Most gardens tend to be multi-functional. That's often as a result of necessity, but it can work incredibly well. This may well sound familiar to you?

In one corner we may create a vegetable patch - perfect for growing a few potatoes, onions or runner beans. The lawn may serve as a part-time football pitch for the children, while a patio area allows for relaxation.

One of the great joys of having this space available is that it also ensures that we have somewhere pleasant to dine in the summer months. Outdoor dining is a special pleasure for many of us. We may feel that our opportunities are sometimes limited by weather conditions, so it makes sense to really maximise those chances when they do come our way.

As you might expect, we're almost bound to say that a garden fire pit provides a great outdoor accessory for cooking. We're almost bound to say it, but that doesn't make it any less true!

The great thing about using a firepit, or even a barbecue, is that the person who's actually doing the cooking can be part of the action. This always seems a lot more sociable than having the poor cook hidden indoors.

You can swiftly, when the time is right, place the hot food on plates and carry it over to your garden table.

Are there rules about where you should do the cooking? It's certainly important that you do consider aspects of safety. Clearly, there are some dangers associated with the use of fire, but there's nothing that can't be overcome with a little thought.

You might wish, for instance, to keep your cooking at a distance from trees, bushes and other potentially flammable plants in the garden. Similarly, you'll want to be at a reasonable distance from your property.

It's also important to avoid leaving the cooking unattended. But that's not just for safety reasons! It's also because you won't want to burn the food!

The real beauty of using a garden firepit is that you're also left with a centre-piece into the evening. Who wants to spend hours looking at a rather ugly old barbecue? Not me, that's for sure!

Instead, you can enjoy the warm glow from your pit or garden brazier long into the night.

It does feel like something of a luxury to be sat outside at midnight in the middle of the summer, warm enough from the flames to only be wearing a T-shirt. This is the life!
